Taking place on 17 January, the Surrey Annual Materials Lecture will be given by Professor Henry Snaith FRS, whose pioneering research promises to radically improve the efficiency of solar cells.
At the Surrey Annual Materials Lecture, which is hosted by the Advanced Technology Institute (ATI), Professor Snaith FRS will talk about his work in the discovery and application of perovskite materials in a talk titled ‘Metal Halide Perovskites: A new family of materials for solar energy conversion’.
Professor Snaith, a physicist at the University of Oxford, was among the first in the world to recognise the potential of perovskite – an abundant and inexpensive compound which absorbs light – to dramatically increase the efficiency and reduce the cost of solar energy. The technology he has developed is now being commercialised through the company he has co-founded, Oxford PV (Oxford Photovoltaics).
Professor Snaith’s work in this field has been recognised with numerous accolades, including the Royal Society’s 2017 Kavli Medal and Lecture and the 2017 Clarivate Citation Laureate. Winners of the Citation Laureate are scientists and economists whose publications have been cited so often, and are therefore so influential, that many past winners have gone on to be recipients of the Nobel Prize.

This will be an exciting opportunity to hear more about his highly cited work on perovskites which is one of the most promising areas of work in the global quest for low cost, high efficiency solar cells. It fits in ideally with the energy materials activities being spearheaded at the University of Surrey on hybrid photovoltaics, energy harvesting materials and energy storage.”
