University of Surrey researcher appointed to prestigious organisation

The University of Surrey is delighted to announce that Dr Simon Usherwood has been appointed Deputy Director of the highly respected organisation ‘UK in a Changing Europe (UKICE).’

Leading the way in producing high-quality independent research into Brexit and the complex relationship between the United Kingdom and European Union, UKICE brings together prominent experts in this field, helping to inform the political landscape.

In his new role, Dr Usherwood will run a series of public events throughout the country, identifying regional issues and concerns about Brexit. He will also conduct in depth research into the social media activity of European leaders and their foreign Ministers to better understand their views on Article 50 negotiations and how this fits into their broader attitudes and approaches to Brexit.

Joining the University of Surrey in 2003, Dr Usherwood has been examining and researching Euroscepticism for more than twenty years. He has been very active in the European Studies community and is currently Treasurer of UACES, the world’s largest European Studies association. Also recognised for his high quality teaching, Dr Usherwood was awarded the Sir Bernard Crick Award for Outstanding Teaching from the Political Studies Association.

Dr Simon Usherwood said: “It is a great privilege to be joining the UKICE programme team, as well as an important opportunity to build on their excellent work in informing the public and political debate on the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. The programme has amply demonstrated both the need and the value of research-led evidence from academic research, especially on an issue that many feel to be too daunting to get more closely involved.

“As Deputy Director I will be working to help more people across the UK understand better the elements involved in the changing relationship with the EU, be they politicians, journalists, businesses or members of the public.”

Professor Graham Miller, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Surrey said: “I am delighted that Simon has been appointed Deputy Director of UKICE. His selection is recognition of his expertise in this area and the high quality of research he undertakes.

“With the coming of Brexit it is important that groups like UKICE exist to provide impartial analysis on proceedings, and I am pleased that one of our academics will be at the forefront of this.”
